Mishal Pakistan, TUJ to highlight social face of FATA PESHAWAR: Mishal Pakistan is to launch AGAHI in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the Frontier Regions (FR). A meeting between Mishal and the Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) was held at TUJ’s head office in Peshawar on Friday.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the two entities on capacity building and training initiatives for journalists in FATA and FR.
Collaboration between Mishal and TUJ will help both organisations to identify the elements contributing to the disconnect with the mainstream news agenda and the gaps within the reporting structure by building capacity of the journalists from FATA and FR on investigative journalism, media ethics, conflict and hazard reporting, interfaith and anti-money laundering.
TUJ President Safdar Hayat Khan Dawar expressed the need for training journalists on socio-economic issues without being exposed to life threatening situations and extended the union’s cooperation towards Mishal’s Media Development Initiative.
He said that TUJ was the only body in FATA that had struggled for the protection of journalists in an area where press laws do not exist.
Journalists from FATA and the Frontier Regions have been feeding the global news grid over the last decade by reporting on war on terror, as a result of which Mishal Pakistan Chief Executive Officer Amir Jahangir believes that in the process social face of FATA had been lost.
He explained to TUJ that journalists should immediately start contributing on issues that covered social and economic dimensions of their respective agencies and regions, and for this purpose Mishal intended to contribute in terms of providing platform of knowledge. Jahangir, a strategic communication and media professional, was honoured as a young global leader by the WEF for his initiatives on improving the state of media in Pakistan. Mishal Pakistan is a strategic communications company established in 2003.
It has undertaken media development initiative in Pakistan encouraging diversity and pluralistic content development besides facilitating journalists through knowledge-sharing platforms in understanding issues in global perspective.
To bolster best practices and promote original journalism which highlights a socially responsible media; Mishal has a memorandum of understanding with press clubs and journalistic associations. There are over 100 press clubs in the country, which provide Mishal with over 30,000 journalists across Pakistan. AGAHI, a programme recently launched by Mishal Pakistan, is enhancing the capacity of investigative and responsible journalism in the country. pr
