World Radio Day: AGAHI announces special categories for Radio journalists in the AGAHI Awards 2014

AGAHI announces special categories for Radio journalists in AGAHI Awards 2014.

Radio plays an essential role in rural development in educating and in improving the livelihoods of the lesser privileged communities. – says Puruesh Chaudhary, President AGAHI.

Radio is the most effective tool in stimulating debate, to promote interest in radio journalism, AGAHI will create special categories in Radio Journalism at the upcoming AGAHI Awards 2014.

The World Radio Day is celebrated on 13th February, all over the world to sensitize journalists, radio station owners, executives and governments in developing gender-related policies and strategies for radio and building radio skills for youth radio production, with a special focus on young journalists as producers, hosts and reporters.

“Radio plays an essential role in rural development in educating and in improving the livelihoods of the lesser privileged communities. There are 12 million radio listeners, 138 commercial and 40 campus radio channels, but as the focus has been increasingly on entertainment content; there is an incredible need for developing and broadcasting content that empowers the vulnerable of the society” said Puruesh Chaudhary, President AGAHI on the World Radio Day 2014.

To promote news content and current affairs programming on radio, AGAHI aims to acknowledge and recognize quality work being produced local radio journalists. Local communities are the building block of democracy and no medium communicates with the local communities better than the radio. Radio journalists have the rare opportunity to use this medium in a very artistic and creative manner, said Murtaza Solangi, Former Director General, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation.

AGAHI Awards receives more than 1500 nominations for excellence in journalism in Pakistan

Pakistan to have 2nd AGAHI Awards for Excellence in Journalism

Agahi Awards aims to shape the future of journalism in Pakistan, international jury to ensure diversity and quality of content through a transparent evaluation methodology.

AGAHI Awards 2013
Mishal Pakistan will be hosting second round of annual journalism awards on September 21st, 2013 in Islamabad. ‘Agahi Awards 2013’ will be celebrated in collaboration with leading press clubs across country, local and international media development bodies, regulatory authorities, private sector and other stakeholders.
The Agahi Awards are an annual series of awards for journalism in Pakistan, developed under the umbrella of the Credibility Lab at Mishal for creating an appreciation methodology for ethical and quality content. The evaluation methodology and criteria of the awards has been designed on the pillars of Media Development Indicators of UNESCO, in collaboration with the Center for International Media Ethics (CIME) and UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The Awards were inaugurated in March 2012 and have become the most prestigious awards for the journalism in Pakistan.
The Awards have created appreciation for journalism in more than twenty different categories including business and economy, conflict, corruption, crime, education, infotainment, the nexus between water, energy and food security, gender and governance, health, extremism and terrorism, peace, interfaith, dignity; thus creating media diversity across print, television, radio and the online media.
The Awards have two special categories “Current Affairs Anchor of the Year” and “News Channel of the Year” in Pakistan. Both these categories are on the basis of people’s choice, which includes voting for these two categories by reaching out via social media engagement, SMS campaign and direct feedback.
To ensure diversity in content and more social issues to be highlighted in media, Mishal Pakistan in collaboration with Save the Children created the health category further dividing them into six sub-categories. This has not only increased the quantum of health content in media, but has also encouraged journalists to write more on the socio-economic challenges in Pakistan.
This year AGAHI Awards received an overwhelming response by the journalist community, where more than 1500 nominations were received from all over the country across more than 20 different categories. The jury will now be evaluating the entries in the coming days.
